Artist Bio

Dorie Petrochko is a botanical and natural science illustrator whose reverence for nature and enchantment with the natural world has been a lifetime interest. Dorie is currently focusing her work on the study of birds, bird anatomy, and feathers, which she finds endlessly fascinating. She is a certified Botanical and Natural Science Illustrator from the New York Botanical Garden and volunteers at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History in New Haven where she works in the Ornithology division of Vertebrate Zoology and often uses their collections as a resource for her paintings.

Dorie was born in Staten Island, New York and began her pursuit of art at the age of sixteen, where she studied drawing and painting at the Art Students League in NYC and Madison, Connecticut. She completed her undergraduate studies in Fine Arts at Wagner College in Staten Island, New York and completed her Masters in Art Education from Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, CT.

She has exhibited widely throughout New England and has been the recipient of awards for her illustrations from The Smithsonian Institution,The Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, The Courage Art Center, The Institute of Children’s Literature, Fairfield Woman Magazine and Gordon Fraser Publications. She currently teaches drawing and painting workshops in nature centers, schools and museums. Dorie maintains a studio in Oxford, CT with her husband Peter Petrochko.
