Artist Blog: Can Abstract Art be successfully Intertwined with Natural Science Illustration ?

Lately, I have been experimenting with abstract watercolor techniques for backgrounds which seem to lend themselves well to illustrative subjects. In my recent painting, “Maelstrom ” I used a loose merging of watermedia ( gouache, watercolor, acrylic ) to create a sense of movement, as in a wind storm. Based on the direction and placement of color, I can determine what images best fit into the format, instead of the other way around. It makes for a challenging and dynamic format with an element of surprise. In this way I can enjoy the best of both worlds, spontaneous watermedia painting and traditional natural science illustration.

The question remains: Can this pass as traditional natural science illustration or is it
entering the realm of abstraction ? Can these lines be crossed ?

Comments would be appreciated.
